Master Joe Schaefer trained directly under Grandmaster Sin Kwang Thé from 1987-1994. While he still trains under Grandmaster Sin often, he has been a private student of Elder Master Leonard since 1994. Master Schaefer has taught Kung Fu and Tai Chi since 1987 and opened up a school in Austin Texas in 1991. Shaolin students in the state have gone from zero to currently over 1300. He was awarded 7th degree Black Belt in 2011, by Shaolin Grandmaster Sin Kwang Thé. Joe received his Ph.D. in Neurophysiology from the University of Texas in 1997 and has taught neurophysiology for 6 years at the University of Texas at Austin. He was awarded young researcher of the year in 1996 (in the field of steroid hormones and neuroscience) and became a published Neuroscience author. Master Joe was also on the teaching faculty of the Academy of Oriental Medicine as the Chi Kung and Tai Chi instructor and he is one of only 13 regional Vice-Presidents of international Shaolin-Do Association (SDA).
